As an MD/PhD candidate in my final years of training, I coordinated my mom's care when she was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer.
I'm here to make sure you know how to use your life vest.
Because nobody should have to take on the unpaid, full-time job of trying to navigate the sea of information regarding their health and options.
I started Osér Clair after my mother was diagnosed with cancer.
She was the first person in my family to face something that serious. I became her care coordinator — talking with her care team, tracking what had been said and by whom, advocating for her as a patient. As an MD/PhD candidate in my final years of training, I understood how the system worked, and it was still hard, especially while I was living it as a daughter and a sister.
That is what stayed with me. If it was that hard with someone like me in the room, what happens to everyone without that person? Navigating a serious diagnosis becomes a second full-time job, demanding time and energy at exactly the moment you have the least of both.
I could do that work for my mother. What I could not be was the calm outside voice, because I was also frightened. That is the person I wanted her to have — and it is the person I can be for someone else's family. Someone who knows who to contact and when. Someone who can read a chart and notice what has not been followed up on. Someone who prepares you to ask real questions instead of leaving you searching the internet at night, and who works through the clinical evidence to lay out the whole picture — including what exists beyond the standard of care, and which trials publish criteria worth taking to your doctor.
Reading the evidence is what I have been trained to do. I have spent the last ten years in research and in medical training: I defended my doctoral thesis work in genetics, have taken additional elective training in medical statistics, and have a final year of medical school to complete. Because I have designed and run studies myself, I know how they are built and where their results get overstated — which matters, because misinformation is very good at sounding certain.
Something else became clear to me during my training: doctors want more time. The constraint is how many patients are in the day, not the will. So the point is not to work around your care team but to make the time you have with them count, on both sides. And once someone genuinely understands their condition, better questions start appearing on their own — usually out of a conversation with someone who knows the territory and is not watching the clock.
That is what I want to offer. A real person in your corner during the frightening parts, who helps you see the full picture and teaches you enough that you keep growing after our work together — so the decisions you make with your physicians are genuinely shared, and genuinely yours. Knowledge is power, and helping people hold some of it is, I think, a way to do a little good in the world.
Working one-on-one with clients, I teach them to interpret biomedical studies and avoid the perils of misinformation. As my clients' Personal Healthcare Strategist & Medical Researcher, I aim to empower clients to make decisions about their health with clarity and confidence.
Wishing you all the best,
Lola
